Reason for Designation: Despite many sightings in the past two decades from eastern Canada, there are insufficient data to evaluate the taxonomy or assign a status to this cougar. There may not be a distinct "eastern" subspecies, and some sightings may be of escaped pets.

Status History: Designated Endangered in April 1978. Species considered in April 1998 and placed in the Data Deficient category.
