Status: Special Concern

Last Examination and Change: November 2003 (In a higher risk category)

Canadian Occurrence: BC, Pacific Ocean

Status Criteria: Met criterion for Threatened, D2, but designated Special Concern because the population is increasing and there is a possible rescue effect.

Sea Lion, Steller

Reason for Designation: There are only three breeding locations in British Columbia. Although the population is increasing, they are sensitive to human disturbance while on land. Threats include the possibility of acute oil spills. There are unexplained declines in other populations to the north and west of British Columbia.

Status History: Designated Not at Risk in April 1987. Status re-examined and designated Special Concern in November 2003.
