Reason for Designation: The species is the only native oyster along the west coast of Canada. Currently, the population is apparently stable but decline in the historic past may re-occur due to rapidly expanding farming of non-native oysters, pressure from recreational and commercial activities, and continued introduction of exotic species of oysters.

Status History: Designated Special Concern in November 2000.
